Oh and there's also a weird tie in to Clifford's creator Norman Bridwell in that Mr. This movie is chock full of absolutely amazing one liners and non sequiturs that absolutely fly over a child's head, but land perfectly with an older audience - it's like the Laffy Taffy jokes level of bad, but in this context it's so good. Oh and the NYPD is hunting down Clifford because they believe he's an actual threat (he is) and an extended scene of the worst CGI'd human I've ever seen in Emily Elizabeth riding Clifford around town. There's a bunch of random scenes in bodegas for no reason at all, a weird crazy old Eastern European lady for no reason at all, and a bunch of other NYC "experiences" thrown in too. I can't remember the order of things as, quite frankly, my entire viewing experience was quite a blur, but I do remember Keenan Thompson randomly popping up as a doctor, a scene where they have to hold a small pug up to Clifford's butt so that the dog can sniff his butt, an entire subplot about Emily Elizabeth and her uncle getting evicted, a plot about Buster Bluth wanting to steal Clifford so that he can study his kaiju DNA and make other kaiju, a weird sidekick to Emily Elizabeth that's the son of like an Asian billionaire and a whole subplot about smuggling Clifford to China, another subplot about needing to steal secrets off of a computer, and so much more. Oh, and, the CGI always looks out of place in every single scene. He starts out absurdly small as the stories go (I watched way too much of that cartoon as a kid), but the CGI is just a full grown Clifford that's hyper buff and swole the size of like a normal human hand running around environments. Oh boy is it even better.Įvery single person involved in this production is hyper aware that 1) children don't know who the hell Clifford is anymore, 2) most people that DO know who he is are now older and adults and 3) Clifford is flat out a kaiju, no dancing around that. I didn't really expect much, but, as someone that enjoyed the Tom & Jerry movie and new Spongebob movie earlier this year I figured this could be in the same realm.
whatever this would be, and, oh is this a journey and a half. My wife shoved an edible in my face and bid me farewell for my journey I was about to take with. I decided to have a self care night of red sauce, red wine, and red dog where I made lasagna, drank a bottle of red wine, and watched this. Clifford is an Eldritch being, I'm convinced of that much.
